Zagora is a desert oasis town in southeastern Morocco’s Draa Valley, often considered the "Gateway to the Sahara." Known for its sprawling palm groves, historic kasbahs, and dramatic desert landscapes, it was once a hub on ancient trans-Saharan caravan routes toward Timbuktu. Its iconic mural reads “Timbuktu – 52 Days by Camel” to mark the traditional journey time Jebel Zagora, a double-peaked mountain (~1,030 m), with remnants of an Almoravid fortress, anchors the skyline behind the town

    Most visitors opt for 2‑day itineraries including camel treks and overnight at desert camps near Zagora or further into Erg Chigaga. Group tours cost ~€60–70, private tours can be €100+ 

  • Budget Tips:
    • Bargain on tours and markets—it’s expected, especially outside Merzouga where tourist volume is lower.
    • Camping tents and budget camps are cheaper around Zagora than in more tourist-frequented sites

  • Timing:
    Best visiting seasons are spring (Mar–May) and fall (Sep–Nov), when temperatures are moderate and date harvests brighten local culture. Summer can exceed 44 °C; winter nights can be chilly
