Latina is a modern city founded in 1932—originally called Littoria—built during Italy’s major reclamation of the Pontine Marshes under Mussolini. Named Latina in 1946, it showcases Rationalist architecture by architects like Piacentini, Mazzoni, and Cambellotti. Today it thrives as a provincial capital combining history, agriculture, and coastal charm just ~80 km from Rome. Population: ~127,500; area: 277 km²

  • Piazza del Popolo & Piazza della Libertà – The heart of Latina, these squares are lined with stunning Rationalist buildings, the Town Hall clock tower, and the Palazzo delle Poste. Sculptures and fountains here pay tribute to the city's reclamation history 

  • Cattedrale di San Marco – A 1933 cathedral in the center of town, showcasing modern mosaics and the influence of town planning in its layout .

  • Museo Civico Duilio Cambellotti – Dedicated to the artist/illustrator behind many monuments celebrating the Pontine land reclamation; housed in the former Opera Nazionale Balilla building .

  • Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea – Features rich collections of Italian 20th-century and contemporary art, established during the city’s early years

  • Giardino di Ninfa – Called “the most romantic garden in the world,” this dreamy botanical ruin garden on medieval sites opens seasonally nearby Latina

  • Getting there: From Rome, take train to Latina Scalo (~40–50 min), then bus or taxi ~9 km to the center. By car, travel via SS148 Pontina or the A1 motorway 

  • Getting around: Walking is ideal in the compact centre. Public transport reaches coastal areas; car recommended for Circeo Park or Ninfa visits. Stay aware of limited public transportation between districts.

  • Vibe: A clean, well-planned mid-century city with strong civic pride. Friendly locals, local markets, and a quieter taste of Lazio life.
