Distrito Federal

The Distrito Federal is the federal unit encompassing Brasília, Brazil’s planned capital inaugurated in 1960. Designed by Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer, this UNESCO World Heritage Site symbolizes the mid‑century modernist dream—iconic architecture surrounded by savannah landscapes and artificial lakes.

 Top Things to Do

  • Praça dos Três Poderes (Three Powers Plaza): Home to Niemeyer’s designs of the National Congress, Planalto Palace, and Supreme Federal Court. Guides offer tours that explain Brazil’s political architecture.

  • Cathedral of Brasília: A spectacular hyperboloid structure of concrete and glass, housing stained-glass panels by Marianne Peretti and suspended angel sculptures

  • Itamaraty Palace: Known as the “Palace of the Arches,” this Foreign Ministry building features graceful arches, reflecting pools, and lush interior gardens.

  • Brasília TV Tower & Monumental Axis: Climb the tower for panoramic views over the layout of the city along its grand central boulevard, featuring the patrimonial axis.

  • Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge (Ponte JK): A modern arch bridge over Lake Paranoá with dramatic curve spans—especially beautiful when lit at night.

  • Paranoá Lake & Pontão do Lago Sul: A vibrant waterfront area offering restaurants, bars, kayak rentals, and scenic sunset views.

  • Brasília National Park: A large green preserve just outside the city with trails, mineral pools, wildlife (capybaras, birds), and hiking routes through the Cerrado biome.

  • Museum of Indigenous Peoples & National Museum (Honestino Guimarães): Explore indigenous art, Brazilian culture, and contemporary exhibits housed in architecturally engaging buildings.

Eat & Drink – Local Flavors

  • Try empadão goiano, pão de queijo, feijoada, and pequi-flavored dishes.

  • Enjoy caipirinhas, guaraná, and brigadeiros for dessert.

  • Visit local bars and food halls in the Sector Hoteleiro for live music and a variety of cuisines.
