Belmopan

Belmopan9/10
Belmopan

Belmopan, the administrative capital since 1970, was built inland after Hurricane Hattie devastated Belize City in 1961; located about 80 km from the coast at 76 m above sea level. A compact city planned around a 4 km Ring Road, its National Assembly building mimics Maya pyramid architecture. Today it's the smallest continental capital by population (~20,000+) but rapidly growing and surrounded by lush greenery and Maya Mountains views.
