Travel guide
Al Shahaniya

Al Shahaniya is a western municipality located approximately 30–40 km northwest of Doha, covering some 3,309 km². It’s best known for its world-renowned camel racing tradition, desert landscapes, and cultural attractions. The city is also home to Qatar’s first solar power plant and wildlife reserves like the Arabian oryx sanctuary.
Top Things to Do & See
1. Al Shahaniya Camel Racetrack
This is Qatar’s premier racing venue. From November to February, domestic and international tournaments light up the desert stage. Instead of human jockeys, colourful robot jockeys control the camels at speeds up to 40 mph. Early morning camel training sessions are open to visitors, with grandstand seating or the local custom of watching races from your car along the track road.
2. Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum
A massive three-building museum set on a historic fort in Al Samriya, about 20 km west of Doha. It houses vast collections of Islamic art, vintage cars, traditional Qatari artifacts, and more. Visit the leaning mosque on site, famously tipped at four degrees.
3. Al Shahaniya Desert Park
This eco-themed park covers around 13,800 m² and displays native flora and eight local animal species. It features play zones, barbecue areas, jogging tracks, an amphitheater, and a café. Ideal for families and eco-education.
4. Al Dosari Zoo & Game Reserve
A wildlife preserve on the outskirts of the municipality hosting small herds of desert animals and native species. Great for a family day out with picnic zones and walking trails.
5. Umm Bab & Dukhan Beaches
Umm Bab Beach (also “Palm Tree Beach”) and Dukhan Public Beach offer calmer coastal escapes. Umm Bab is dotted with small palms and peaceful terrain, while Dukhan has soft sands, clear waters, and nearby food outlets at Dukhan Souq.
6. Zekreet Peninsula & Richard Serra Sculptures
A short drive away, this rocky desert coastline features unusual mushroom rock formations and the monumental “East–West/West–East” steel sculptures by Richard Serra—a dramatic backdrop for desert exploration and photos.
Eat & Drink
Dining within Al Shahania is basic—options include Dukhan Souq’s food stands and casual restaurants such as Dukhan Beach Restaurant, Al Lewan, Jawaher Palace, and Eat Time. For broader cuisine, combining a day in Doha or Dukhan provides richer choices.
