Traveling Through JFK in 2026? What Passengers and Drivers Need to Know

JFK Airport Construction May Affect Road Travel
John F. Kennedy International Airport is undergoing a major transformation, and ongoing construction is affecting roadway traffic, terminal access, and passenger pickup and drop-off times.
JFK officially warns travelers that construction can cause delays for taxis, private cars, professional car services, and ride applications. Passengers traveling by road should allow additional time and remain in communication with their driver.
Know Your JFK Terminal
JFK currently has five active passenger terminals: Terminals 1, 4, 5, 7, and 8. More than 70 airlines operate at the airport.
Terminal 1
Terminal 1 primarily serves international airlines, including Air France, Korean Air, Lufthansa, SWISS, Turkish Airlines, EgyptAir, and Royal Air Maroc.
Terminal 4
Terminal 4 is one of JFK’s largest and busiest international terminals. Airlines operating there include Delta Air Lines, Avianca, Emirates, Virgin Atlantic, LATAM, Singapore Airlines, and Etihad Airways.
Terminal 5
Terminal 5 primarily serves JetBlue, Cape Air, and Sun Country Airlines.
Some late-night JetBlue international arrivals may use Terminal 4, so passengers and drivers should always confirm the actual arrival terminal.
Terminal 7
Airlines operating from Terminal 7 include Aer Lingus, Air Canada, ANA, Ethiopian Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Icelandair, and Norse Atlantic Airways.
Terminal 8
Terminal 8 serves American Airlines and several partner airlines, including British Airways, Alaska Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Iberia, Japan Airlines, and Qatar Airways.
Terminal assignments can change, so travelers should verify the airline, flight number, and operating terminal before traveling.
Allow Additional Time for Construction
Construction-related traffic can make the final approach to a terminal slower than expected.
Travelers using professional car services should reserve transportation in advance, provide the complete flight number and correct terminal, check airport advisories before departure, allow additional travel time during busy periods, keep their phones available for driver updates, and confirm any terminal changes with the airline.
For airport departures, the scheduled flight time is not the time to reach the terminal. Travelers still need time for baggage check-in, security screening, walking to the gate, and possible document verification.
JFK Curbside Rules
There is no parking or waiting permitted directly in front of JFK’s terminals. Terminal curbs are for active passenger pickups and drop-offs only.
Drivers should never leave a vehicle unattended at the terminal curb because unattended vehicles may be towed.
Passengers should collect their luggage and contact their driver before proceeding to the designated ground-transportation area.
Free Waiting Options for Drivers
JFK currently provides two free waiting areas.
The Lefferts Boulevard Wait Lot is convenient for Terminals 1 and 4. Passengers can reach the terminals using a free AirTrain ride, which JFK estimates takes approximately eight minutes. Drivers must remain with their vehicles.
JFK Cell Phone Lot East is less than five minutes from the terminals and is the recommended option for drivers collecting passengers from Terminals 5, 7, and 8.
Drivers should wait until the passenger has collected their luggage and is ready at the designated pickup location before approaching the terminal.
Using the AirTrain
The JFK AirTrain connects passengers with airport terminals, parking facilities, public transportation, rental-car services, hotel shuttle areas, and designated pickup and waiting locations.
The AirTrain can be especially helpful when road congestion makes direct terminal access difficult.
Protect Yourself From Unauthorized Drivers
JFK advises travelers not to accept unsolicited transportation offers from individuals approaching them inside or outside the terminal.
Passengers should use only prearranged professional car services, authorized taxis, designated ride-application areas, or official airport transportation providers. Travelers who need assistance can visit a Port Authority Information Center in the arrivals area.
Plan Ahead Before Traveling to JFK
Before traveling to JFK, passengers should confirm their operating airline, flight number, departure or arrival terminal, scheduled time, passenger contact number, and luggage and vehicle requirements.
LimoAllOver is developing a modern digital marketplace designed to connect travelers with independent professional limousine companies and licensed chauffeurs.
Professional drivers and limousine companies can download the LimoAllOver Driver App from the Apple App Store.
Construction conditions, road access, pickup procedures, and terminal assignments may change. Travelers and drivers should always follow current airport signs and official instructions.
