Newark Airport to Manhattan in 2026: Car Service, Taxi, Train or Express Bus?

Comparing Your Transportation Options
Passengers arriving at Newark Liberty International Airport have several options for reaching Manhattan. The best choice depends on the destination, budget, luggage, group size and preference for comfort or speed.
Available transportation includes professional car service, taxis, NJ Transit trains and the Newark Airport Express Bus.
Travel times and prices may change because of traffic, schedules, construction, tolls and other charges.
Professional Car Service
A prearranged professional car service provides direct transportation from Newark Airport to a hotel, residence, office, cruise terminal or other Manhattan destination.
It may be especially convenient for:
Business travelers
Families with children
Groups requiring larger vehicles
Passengers carrying several bags
Older adults
Travelers requiring additional assistance
Passengers arriving late at night
Customers who prefer private, scheduled transportation
Provide your transportation provider with the complete flight number, arrival terminal, passenger phone number, group size and luggage requirements.
After collecting your bags, follow the airport’s ground-transportation signs and remain available by phone for updated meeting instructions.
Taxi Service to Manhattan
Official taxis are available outside every Newark Airport terminal.
Newark Airport currently publishes the following estimated base fares to Manhattan:
Battery Park to West 13th Street: $60
West 14th to West 50th Street: $65
West 51st to West 96th Street: $70
West 97th to West 185th Street: $75
Above West 185th Street: $80
These estimates do not include tips, tolls, congestion pricing or additional airport and destination fees. Newark Airport also advises that taxis charge $1 for each bag, including carry-ons.
Additional charges may include:
A $2 airport access fee
A $10 rush-hour surcharge for trips from Newark Airport to New York
A $5 charge for destinations on Manhattan’s East Side between Battery Park and 145th Street
Other applicable destination and time-based fees
Passengers should use only the official airport taxi stand and should not accept transportation offers from individuals approaching them inside the terminal.
Current rates are available through the official Newark Airport taxi guide.
AirTrain and NJ Transit to Midtown
Travelers can use Newark’s AirTrain to reach the Newark Liberty International Airport Train Station and transfer to an NJ Transit train for New York Penn Station.
The current combined trip to Midtown Manhattan is approximately 30 minutes and $17.25 per adult, according to Newark Airport and NJ Transit. Travelers should allow additional time for waiting, walking and transfers.
The general steps are:
Follow signs from the terminal to the AirTrain.
Take the AirTrain to Newark Liberty International Airport Train Station.
Board an NJ Transit Northeast Corridor or North Jersey Coast Line train.
Exit at New York Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan.
The AirTrain access fee is included when purchasing the correct NJ Transit airport ticket. Travelers should keep their ticket because it may be required when entering or leaving the airport rail station.
Tickets can be purchased through the NJ Transit mobile application or a station ticket machine before boarding. Purchasing a ticket onboard may result in an additional surcharge.
Important Terminal A AirTrain Information
The existing AirTrain does not connect directly to Terminal A.
Terminal A passengers may need to walk approximately 15 minutes along a covered pathway or take a complimentary shuttle for an approximately five-minute ride.
Travelers carrying heavy luggage, traveling with children or requiring mobility support should allow additional time.
Newark Airport is modernizing the AirTrain system. Temporary service disruptions may occur, with replacement shuttle buses operating when the train is unavailable.
August 2026 AirTrain Shutdown
The Newark AirTrain is scheduled for a complete maintenance shutdown from 8:00 p.m. Saturday, August 22, 2026, until 8:00 a.m. Sunday, August 23, 2026.
Replacement shuttle buses are scheduled to serve:
Newark Airport Train Station
Terminal A
Terminal B
Terminal C
Parking and Rental Car Center
P3 hotel-shuttle station
P4 parking station
Newark Airport estimates that replacement buses may take approximately 20–25 minutes between the Airport Train Station and passenger terminals under light traffic.
Travelers using NJ Transit or Amtrak during the shutdown should leave additional time and follow the airport’s temporary bus signs.
Travelers should review the official AirTrain maintenance advisory before traveling.
Newark Airport Express Bus
The Newark Airport Express Bus stops at each airport terminal and serves three Midtown Manhattan locations:
Grand Central Terminal
Bryant Park
Port Authority Bus Terminal
The airport currently lists an estimated travel time of approximately 50 minutes.
Current ticket prices are:
$23.50 one way
$39.50 round trip
Traffic conditions may significantly affect bus travel times, particularly during rush hour.
Which Option Should You Choose?
Choose a professional car service when privacy, comfort, luggage capacity and direct transportation are priorities.
Choose a taxi when you want immediate regulated curbside transportation without arranging a reservation.
Choose AirTrain and NJ Transit when you want to avoid highway traffic and reach New York Penn Station efficiently.
Choose the Newark Airport Express Bus when your destination is near Grand Central, Bryant Park or the Port Authority Bus Terminal.
Five Tips for a Smoother Trip
1. Confirm Your Arrival Terminal
Newark has Terminals A, B and C. Some airlines use more than one terminal.
2. Check Transportation Alerts
AirTrain maintenance, construction and service disruptions can affect your plans.
3. Consider Your Luggage
Train and bus travel may require walking and handling luggage during transfers.
4. Allow for Traffic
Road travel between Newark Airport and Manhattan can take longer during rush hour, bad weather or special events.
5. Use Authorized Transportation
Travelers should reserve a professional provider or follow airport signs to official taxi, shuttle and transportation areas.
